Hello, I am Joseph Keating and welcome to my artist website. I hope you take a look around and find something you like, let me know if you have any questions.
Ya know, I've been really getting in to oil painting, it's something I had never really done before until I took painting in my senior year of college, I had done a bit of acryllic (mostly in high school and painting RPG miniatures) and loads of digital painting, but oil remained intimidating and even after I had done the class, I reserved it until one day my coworker convinced me that my excuses to not do it were not valid, so, I spent the $90 or so to get started and now it is my preferred medium. There is a quality to oil that cannot be replicated that I love, some of my favorite artists are painters (Joaquin Sorolla, Magnus Enckell, Raphael and Eric Fishcl). The first oil painting I did after college is "Shy", now this piece was originally a pen drawing for Inktober, the process made me fall in love with the medium, the color is unmatched and the expressive nature of the built up brushstrokes is lovely. "Shy" has its merit but is not personally my favorite, that title is disputed between "Angel and Demons in the Garden of Evil" and "Taknao Beach". My basement is a little unwelcoming to those not accustomed to seeing nudity, but I've become desensitized to. I personally believe that the human body is beautiful and nothing to be ashamed of and skin rendered in oil paint is absolutely gorgeous.
While we are on the subject of "Angel and Demons in the Garden of Evil" I must state that I am not a religious man, however, my anthropology background makes me deeply fascinated by it and the subject of demons and angels deeply fascinates me. The title of the painting was inspired by lyrics from Lana Del Rey's song "Gods and Monsters" (my personal anthem) in the song Lana says "In the Land of Gods and Monsters, I was an angel, living in the Garden of Evil" and "In the Land of Gods and Monsters, I was an angel, looking to get f*ed hard) so this painting was born. The demons in this painting are Incubus (male) and sucubus (female), demons that use sex to steal the souls of other beings.
Taknao is the capital city of the Shogunate of Oko and was a centerpiece of spice trade in Estria from the Early 3,000's W.H. to 3,400 W.H when civil war erupted in the country between loyalists, supporting a fully independent Oko and supporters of unification with their neighbors to the North, Quanchi. Shogun Hinabusa Matukura would be defeated by the Unionists in 3,475 W.H and replaced by an emperor, Julios I (Takna Muchimosu) who would marry empress Wujita, their son Julios II (Orubgat WujitaMosu) would be crowned the first emperor of Quazhog after the death of his mother in 3,490 W.H, 2 years after the death of his father. I like this painting because it is summery and bright, everything that South Dakota is not (at least most of the year) and it is such a mood lifter, plus it is a bit of a show off piece for me with all the figures (still doesn't beat "Nightclub Rendevous" in shear quantity though.
I'll keep you all posted, salud!
